I first really learned about Gwen through the spectacular Spider-Man animated show, and continued to learn more about what her character could be from Spider-Gwen. I may be a little biased, and do really really like Gwen's and Peter's relationship in the show, though looking through more material about Spider-Man, I do agree that MJ works for Peter better in a romance sort of way than Gwen did.

Though I do wonder what it would be like if Gwen was allowed to live and they gave Gwen and Oeter more interactions and how that would go in the comics,

That’s a good way to be introduced to Spidey and his supporting cast, and good point about what it would be like if Gwen was allowed to live! It’d make for an interesting “What If…” story!

You mentioned children a couple times, Max has other adopted siblings? Are they important to the story/will they play a similar major roll like the siblings in Shazam comics, or are they more supporting characters?

He does! He has an two brothers and a sister. Nigel is the biological child of Mallory and Joshua, but Jean and Arthur are also adopted. They’re supporting characters in Max’s story.

Ohh, a secret evil side to one of the heroes is always a trope that I think is really interesting. I really like the heart motif on her outfit, because it enforces the idea that this is a corrupted magical girl/heshin hero and that's just chef's kiss.

I like the backstory too!
